The 2014 Tasmanian Yachting Awards

The best of the yachting fraternity in the state came together in Hobart for the 2014 Tasmanian Yachting Awards on Sunday and Wynyard got the prestigious award of being the winner of the Club of the Year along with Sandy Bay.

The coastal club was awarded another award a few months ago. They got the award of Australian Yacht Club of the Year given by Yachting Australia and after a week of this, they were listen to be the winner of Medibank Active Tasmania Awards.

Neal Rodwell, the commodore of Wynyard Yacht Club said that the whole thing happened as if someone was claiming a trifecta. For all that they do, the whole thing became very rewarding. Their mission was never to win awards but wanted to solve many problems that a lot of people face and to be rewarded for that is a very nice feeling.

The secretary of the club Chris Symonds and Rodwell were present at Hobart to receive the award along with Greg Rowlings, the Tasmania executive officer who read out a very impressive account of the Club’s activities in the last year. Rowlings told the crowd about the small club that was created at the bank of Inglis River has become very successful today by engaging themselves with the local council, sporting clubs and schools to encourage more and more children to take up sailing.

Many of the clubs in the country face same problem but when they found some bigger problems, they found it best to involve the whole community to set up some partnerships so that they could survive. That later turned out to be the fortune for the club. The yacht clubs today need to be open to everything aquatic and not just be limited to races.

Andrew Hunn and Amelia Catt won the awards for top individual sailors of the year.
